VETP is a non-profit volunteer organization which aims to provide free English lessons for Michigan State University's international students, scholars, friends and family. To meet your specific needs, our program offers a wide selection of tutors and class schedules.

Free classes
These classes for Adults (minimum age 18) provide opportunities to speak English in a casual setting. Topics for discussion include such things as American holidays, cooking, crafts, current events in the newspaper, sports, medical terms, etc. The class meets once a week for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and are led by volunteers from the Lansing area.

Free individual tutoring & classes
Refugees and immigrants from 29 countries are receiving English instruction at the Capital Area Literacy Coalition. Students are interviewed to assess their oral English levels as well as their reading, writing and spelling abilities. They are also asked for their short-term and long-term goals. A translator is used when necessary.

Migrant Literacy Project by The Capital Area Literacy Coalition
Free classes
Volunteers in the Migrant Literacy Project teach reading and writing and English as a Second Language to Hispanic adults and children temporarily living in area migrant camps. Localities vary depending on season and growing schedules. Most camps are about a half hour drive away from Lansing. Carpooling is available.

This program provides an opportunity for foreign-born adult learners to achieve proficiency in English language communication skills (understanding, reading, writing and speaking) in order to transition to higher education, obtain or improve employment, and function within their community.

Adult ESL program services ESL adult population in the Lansing area by providing certified ESL teachers who service 50 students each semester. At the time of enrollment, the CASAS assessment is administered, and the staff completes enrollment forms individually with eligible students.

Low-cost conversation and U.S. Culture classes in Wells Hall on the MSU campus
Classes are for 6 weeks in the spring, twice a week for 2 hours each session. A placement test is given before classes start. In spring 2013, the fee for attending all 6 weeks of classes was $15.00 total.
